Voter Registration & Elections

The Albany/Dougherty County Board of Registration and Elections was created through local legislation in the Georgia General Assembly. The members of the Board collectively serve as the superintendent of elections. Appointed to serve two-year terms, Board Members are appointed as followed: one by the Dougherty County Commission; one by the City of Albany; one by the local Republican Party; one by the local Democratic Party; and the fifth member is appointed by the other four appointees.

The mission of the Albany-Dougherty County Joint Board of Registration and Elections is to register citizens of Dougherty County to vote; to ensure that elections are free, impartial, fair, accurate, convenient and accessible to all voters; to encourage voter participation; to provide excellent customer service to voters, candidates, and the media; and to the public understand and follow all laws, rules and regulations.

Ginger Nickerson serves as Supervisor of the Albany/Dougherty County Board of Registration and Elections. The Board of Elections meets the third Wednesday of every month in the Government Center, Room 120, at 4:00 p.m. *Note: Meetings are subject to change. Applications to register to vote are available at the following locations:

  • Voter Registration and Elections Office
  • Albany State University and Darton College Libraries
  • Albany Technical College
  • Department of Family and Children Services
  • High Schools
  • Public Libraries

To register to vote, you must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be a legal resident of Georgia and the county in which he/she seeks to vote
  • 17 ½ years old to vote
  • 18 years old to cast a ballot
  • Not be serving a sentence for a conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude
  • Have not been found mentally incompetent by a judge

*Registration or changes to a registration must be made at least 30 days prior to an election. A voter precinct card should arrive by mail after the application is received in the registrar’s office.

To verify your voter registration status and view a sample ballot for your precinct, complete the information as requested on the Secretary of State’s My Voter Page (MVP) and click on search. Information will be provided regarding your registration status and polling location. This information is updated nightly by the Georgia Secretary of State’s voter registration system.

The Albany/Dougherty County Voter Registration and Elections Office is located at 222 Pine Avenue, the Government Center Building, Second Floor, Room 220. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
